WEST 49 CANADIAN OPEN PRESENTED BY XBOX A HIT WITH HAMILTON FANS …Thousands More Take In PLG’s ‘Best Trick’ Win Live On MSN Sympatico Webcast

The 2006 West 49 Canadian Open presented by Xbox visited Hamilton’s Copps Coliseum for the first time September 29-October 1, and more than 16,050 fans, along with 80,000 fans at home watching on the live MSN Sympatico webcast, helped make it the most successful year in the event’s five-year history.

Canadian Pierre Luc Gagnon took home top prize in the KD Quarter Pipe Best Trick competition on Sunday afternoon, beating out Buster Halterman and upcoming star Rob Lorifice.  Last year' s champion Greg Lutzka won the Billabong Street Course competition with his great use of every feature on the Spinworks designed course. His front side flip sealed the deal over Canadian Paul Machnau whose rail tricks were superb but not enough to catch Lutzka.  Rounding out third was Dennis Busentitz from CA who has been rising up the World Cup rankings with a recent good finish at Slam City Jam.

Canadians fared well with Morgan Smith's technical run landing him a top ten finish while Ryan Decenzo (20 yrs old) came sixth.

“The fans in Hamilton really came out and helped make this year’s West 49 Canadian a huge success,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of event properties for IMG Canada.  “Copps Coliseum provided a fabulous backdrop for the event, and the new live webcast on MSN Sympatico brought the event into thousands of homes around the world.”

In the women’s street competition, Lacy Baker had a great technical run to take home top honours over last year’s champion Amy Caron.  Second place went to Chicago’s Marissa Del Santo.

“Once again, the West 49 Canadian Open brought fans the best action in pro skateboarding and the fans showed why the Canadian stop is one of the most popular on the World Skateboarding Tour,” said Cindy Mielke, Director of Marketing for West 49.  “We’re very proud of this event and look forward to growing it in future years.”
